Smoke erupts from transformer at Burrabazar crossing, sparks panic
Sonia Gandhi has reportedly proposed a merger between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress during recent discussions with Mamata Banerjee, according to sources familiar with the matter. The reported proposal comes at a time when the TMC is facing internal dissent and a series of high-profile departures. Sources said Mamata Banerjee has not taken an immediate decision and has sought additional time to consider the proposal.
According to sources, Sonia Gandhi conveyed concerns about increasing political pressure on the TMC and suggested that a merger could strengthen the opposition's position. The proposal was reportedly discussed during direct communication between the Congress leader and Mamata Banerjee, with the conversation focusing on the current political situation and developments within the Trinamool Congress.
Sources further indicated that the Congress leadership outlined a possible organisational framework in the event of a merger. Under the reported proposal, Mamata Banerjee could be offered the position of National Vice President of the Congress, while TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee could be accommodated in the role of General Secretary. Neither the Congress nor the TMC has officially confirmed the existence of such a proposal.
The reported discussions come amid continuing unrest within the TMC and growing speculation regarding the party's future direction. Sources said concerns over internal divisions and leadership issues have contributed to the ongoing political uncertainty. The developments have also coincided with recent resignations and expressions of dissatisfaction from sections of the party leadership.
Attention has also focused on Abhishek Banerjee's recent meeting with Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi. Sources described the meeting as positive and said it lasted for more than one-and-a-half hours. According to people familiar with the discussions, the two leaders spoke about the current political situation, developments following the recently concluded West Bengal elections, and issues related to opposition coordination.
